Singapore Shipping Forum 2024: Disruption, Decarbonisation And Digitalisation – A Reset

Date/Time:

09:45 Thursday 18 April - 16:30 Thursday 18 April

The Moore Stephens – BNP Paribas Singapore Shipping Forum 2024, was held from 9.45am to 4.30pm on Thursday, 18 April 2024, at the Raffles Hotel. This Forum was held in conjunction with the annual Singapore Maritime Week organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. The broad theme of that year’s Forum was Disruption, Decarbonisation, and Digitalisation, the 3 “D”s that were at the forefront of shipping challenges.

In terms of disruption, the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic and attendant global shipping and supply chain disruptions were major shocks to global economies. Post-COVID, the world witnessed the escalation of the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and the heightened geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea and the Middle East. These developments relating to the volatile geopolitical situations implicated international trade and global macroeconomics and therefore shipping. Already, the impact of these forces on shipping had been seen in trade flow, shipping routes, and freight rates.

The shipping industry came under intensified scrutiny and pressure to decarbonise. The COP 28 meeting in Dubai would, without doubt, accelerate these efforts. To achieve decarbonisation objectives, leading industry players played a key role in harnessing new technologies, including lower carbon fuels, alternative propulsion technologies, and others.

In recent years, the industry had accelerated its adoption of digitalisation and technological advancements. This was partly necessitated by the wave of challenges in the economic and regulatory landscape, for which digitalisation offered potential solutions. These included issues with maritime operational efficiencies, carbon measurement, cyber-security, and others. During the Forum, leading industry players shared views on how digitalisation was increasingly leading the way for the industry to achieve objectives related to decarbonisation.
The fast-paced developments relating to the 3 "D"s had deep implications for industry players, constantly changing the landscape and threats and opportunities that confronted the industry. In that Forum, an exciting lineup of experts was put together who shared their views on these developments and shared experiences, ideas, as well as possible action plans.

Registration with Coffee starts at 9.45am.
